American Legion Post 311 History

December 11, 1944

The present building known as Post 311, was originally a private residence that was turned over to the newly chartered American Legion Post 311, in 1944. Since that time, the post has served as a focal point for Waterford Township. Various community organizations use the building and pavilion for promoting Americanism as well as meetings and special events etc. The building has gone through several interior renovations over the years, to include; bar relocations, new bathroom and kitchen facilities as well as a meeting room on the second floor. Our American Legion Auxiliary Unit was founded two years after the Post was chartered in 1946. Our Sons of The American Legion were permanantley chartered in 1966.

We are very proud of our Legion Family. Members are always willing to co-operate in every Legion activity and have gained statewide recognition for our programs and service to our Veterans.

                                                                              Our Most Patriotic Days

MEMORIAL DAY has always been an outstanding occasion in this community. In addition to memorial events throughout our community like our Memorial Day Service and Parade, the  heartfelt goal of every Veteran is to keep MEMORIAL DAY sacred to the memory of our lost comrades from all of the wars of the country; and that all graves are decorated on this National Holiday. The MEMORIAL DAY Parade in Atco has been our Posts tradition for over 70 years. Bring the family and join us!

ARMISTICE DAY, now called VETERANS' DAY, originally marked the end of fighting in World War I. It is an important holiday on the calendar of Legionnaires everywhere and in the hearts of all Veterans.  An important tradition was established when the Post led in the memorial exercises at 11 o'clock on the morning of November 11, marking the exact hour of the cessation of hostility on the war fronts. 11:11:11
